Is it really that effective to apply tape to exercise like a pro?

Update:2022-04-06 15:22
We now often see that in some competitions, some athletes will have adhesive tape attached to a certain part of their body. People who are not familiar with this kind of tape will think that it is an injury. In fact, it is called an intramuscular tape, also called a muscle tape or elastic therapy tape.

Since its invention in the 1970s, muscle tape has been used in the field of sports protection, and it has different colors, forming a unique scenery on the field. In recent years, it has been often seen not only in professional sports, but also in marathon competitions.

Let's take a brief look at the intramuscular patch first. Its English name is Kenisio Tape, which is currently the most common treatment method for the prevention, rehabilitation and improvement of body performance for musculoskeletal and joint injuries. It was first invented by Dr. Kase Jianjian in Japan in the late 1970s. The name comes from the prefix of the English word "Kinesiology", which is translated as "Kinesiology" in China. Domestic professionals often call it "Kinesiology". Stickers, muscle energy stickers, muscle stickers, etc.

The kinesthetic patch is divided into three layers: the outermost layer is a breathable and elastic waterproof cotton cloth (so the patch can be stretched within a certain limit, up to 130%~150%) The middle layer is usually acrylate hypoallergenic Glue, the inner layer is backing paper.

The rubber surface of the middle layer is distributed in the shape of water ripples (the width, spacing, wavelength and amplitude of the ripples are specified). The glue coated on the qualified patch should pass the biocompatibility test, generally it is not easy to cause skin allergy and does not contain pharmaceutical ingredients.

Precisely because it has no medicinal properties, it is also said to relieve pain, reduce edema, improve blood circulation, correct posture, and help muscles contract and relax. That's why it's so popular.
But is it really so magical? You must know the following 8 conclusions about the clinical research on the intramuscular effect post at home and abroad.

1 The application of kinesthetic tapes that may increase skeletal muscle strength may have some therapeutic effect, but is not clinically meaningful. In some studies, individual muscle peak force/peak torque was increased, but the patch did not help healthy adults gain strength.
2 A study of healthy individuals using different kinesio taping methods on the same site showed that none of the different kinesthetic tapes produced facilitation and inhibition (ie, did not increase muscle strength).
3 For those who support the effect of kinesio tape, it is more from the psychological suggestion effect.
4 Kinesiology patches may have an injury-preventive effect, but these studies did not provide direct measures of injury-prevention.
5 In a comparative study investigating kinesiolytic tapes for pain relief, there were even clinically insignificant results.
6 In a study on the effect of kinesio tapes on symptoms of low back pain, the application of kinesio tapes with moderate stretching to create wrinkles in the skin was no more effective than no stretching of the tapes. This result directly challenge the mechanism of action of this therapy.
7 The appropriate method of the kinesthetic tape has a certain effect on limiting the range of motion of the joints.
8 The current study shows that the application of kinesio tapes did not result in higher peak torque and increased work during joint movement, nor did it shorten the retention time of peak torque during exercise in healthy young adults. Therefore, the positive results of previous studies on the kinesthetic tape can be attributed to the placebo effect.

Therefore, the psychological comfort effect of the kinesio tape is actually greater than the actual physical effect.
Finally, I would like to remind everyone that if you want to use this patch to reduce swelling and pain, or to partially restrict joint movement, you must master the correct method of use, and allow your body to adapt for a period of time after the patch is applied. If you experience itching or other discomfort in the area where the patch is attached, or if the original movement pattern has changed, please remove the patch immediately.
